Salcer

Salsa steps, counted out loud.

Two dancers and a conga player under a warm sun

Put this on the table, stand in front of it, and dance. Salcer shows you where the feet go, eight counts at a time, and counts along out loud so you can keep your eyes up.

Pick a single step and drill it, or ask for a lesson and it will string steps together for a few minutes, calling the name of the next one before it arrives.

Practice one step

Slower is for learning the shape of a step; around 110 is a comfortable practice tempo, and a real salsa track runs 160 and up. The counting and the step names are two separate voices, so you can turn either of them down on its own.

Reading the floor

  • Both feet look the same. You see them from above, as if looking down at your own.
  • A foot shading gold is tapping where it already stands.
  • Counts 4 and 8 are rests. Nothing moves; the counting carries on.
  • Each count ends on its picture, and count 1 sets off from the feet together.
